This feminist icon had an unconventional road to becoming such a memorable artist, having been originally a housewife in the early 60s raising three children, she blew up onto the scene of performance art in the late 60s which focused on her transition from housewife to artist through collaged photography. Barbara T. Smith was never afraid to display her body for the sake of art either, which she gladly did in an avant-garde, and taboo for the time, performance called “Feed Me” which she put on in 1973. She basically laid naked on a mattress in the middle of a bathroom with food and surgical devices around her. She retold this story and shared some black and white pictures of this in the 2010 documentary !Women Art Revolution, and she is definitely about as beautiful as they come! Ah, the 60s and 70s, we remember you fondly and you too Babs!
